Mercado Libre: Compras online

Mercado Libre is the dominant online marketplace across Latin America — Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and neighbouring markets. In much of the region it occupies the position Amazon holds elsewhere, and its logistics arm and payment service are part of why.

Why the rating is unusually high

At 4.8 across a very large number of ratings, it sits above most retail apps. The infrastructure is the reason: Mercado Envíos handles delivery directly in the main markets, so delivery estimates are met more often than in marketplaces that leave shipping to sellers. Mercado Pago handles payment and dispute resolution.

What to know as a buyer

• Check whether an item is Full or seller-shipped. Items in Mercado Libre’s own warehouses ship fast and reliably; seller-shipped items vary a great deal.
• The buyer protection is real and is the main advantage over buying direct. Disputes go through the platform rather than to the seller.
• Prices for the same item vary widely between listings; the default sort is not by price.

Practical notes

• The app is region-specific in content but a single account works across the sites.
• Mercado Pago functions as a wallet and in several markets as a full financial account, which is a larger commitment than a shopping app and worth treating as such.
• Notification volume is high by default, including price-drop and promotional alerts.

Who it is for

Anyone shopping in Latin America. Outside the region it is not useful.
