Yahoo Mail is a mail client that handles Yahoo accounts and, like most modern clients, Gmail, Outlook and other IMAP accounts alongside them.

What distinguishes it

The features aimed at high-volume consumer mail are its genuine strength:

• Automatic categorisation of receipts, subscriptions, travel and packages, with a package-tracking view that pulls carrier status from confirmation emails.
• One-tap unsubscribe surfaced across newsletters rather than buried per message.
• A large free storage allowance relative to competitors.

If your inbox is mostly retail mail and you want it sorted without doing it yourself, that combination is the case for it.

The trade-off

Yahoo’s business is advertising, and the app shows ads in the message list. They are styled close enough to real messages that people tap them by accident, which is the most common complaint. A paid tier removes them.

Content scanning for personalisation is part of the model. That is disclosed rather than hidden, but it is a different arrangement from a paid client and worth being clear about before moving your mail here.

Security note

If you hold a long-standing Yahoo account, it is worth checking it has two-factor authentication enabled and an app password rather than a legacy one. Yahoo accounts were subject to very large historical breaches, and dormant accounts are a common target.
