WPS Office opens and edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint files on Android, plus PDFs. Its appeal over Microsoft’s own apps is that one install covers all document types and the free tier does more.

Where it is genuinely strong

• Format fidelity is good. Complex Office documents survive round-tripping better than most alternatives at this price.
• PDF handling is included rather than being a separate app, including annotation and conversion.
• It works on devices where Microsoft’s apps are heavy or unavailable.

The advertising

The free version carries advertising, including interstitials, and the density is a common complaint. There is a paid tier that removes it. This is worth deciding on early because the ads appear at document-open time, which is exactly when interruption is most annoying.

The thing to weigh

WPS is developed by Kingsoft, a Chinese company. Documents can be edited entirely on the device, but the app also offers cloud storage and account sync. If you handle sensitive documents, keep it local and decline the account — the offline path is fully functional and is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation.

Alternatives

Google’s Docs, Sheets and Slides apps are free without advertising but weaker on complex Office formatting. Microsoft’s own apps handle their formats best and are free for personal use on smaller screens. WPS wins on breadth in a single install.
