Planet Free VPN is one of many free VPN apps on the store. Rather than repeat the economics of free VPNs — covered on our Turbo VPN page — this is about a more basic confusion: what a VPN protects and what it does not.

What a VPN actually changes

It moves the point at which your traffic joins the public internet. Your network operator sees an encrypted tunnel to the VPN instead of the sites you visit. The sites see the VPN’s address instead of yours.

That is the whole of it, and it is genuinely useful for two things: using a network you do not trust, and reaching something blocked where you are.

What it does not do

• It is not anonymity. You are moving trust from your ISP to the VPN operator, not removing it. Whoever runs the exit point can see what your ISP used to see.
• It does not stop tracking. Cookies, browser fingerprints and any account you are logged into identify you regardless of the address traffic arrives from.
• It does not make illegal things legal, and it does not hide activity from a service you have signed into.

What to check before trusting any VPN

• A published independent audit by a named firm, with a date. Not a policy that claims no logging.
• Identifiable ownership and jurisdiction. Many popular free VPN apps have corporate structures that are hard to trace.
• A business model you can point to. A subscription is a clearer arrangement than advertising.
